Hike Difficulty Levels

Hike Difficulty Levels:

PLEASE DO NOT sign up for hikes that are beyond your hiking abilities.  These hikes are for the enjoyment of all and we hike at a steady pace.  Other hikers should not have to wait for someone who is not physically capable of the terrain.

Use these general guidelines to help you determine if the hike is for you.

  • An “Easy” hike is great for beginner hikers in fair condition who may want to begin conditioning themselves. Trails are generally in good condition with very little elevation gain.  Average pace = 3.0-3.5 mph

  • A “Moderate” hike is generally suitable for hikers in decent hiking condition who want a bit of a challenge. The terrain will involve a moderate incline and may have some steeper sections.   Generally 3-5 miles with some potentially-challenging elevation gain.  Average pace = 2.25-2.75 mph

Those who attend the more strenuous hikes (below) should take extra precautions and be prepared for unusual or emergency situations.   Stream crossings, first aid kit, extra nutrition and hydration, weather anomalies, unfriendly wildlife are just a few.

  • “Moderately Strenuous” hikes are for experienced hikers and will be challenging for an unconditioned person. The terrain will involve steady and often steep inclines.  Do not confuse these hikes with “Moderate” level hikes… these are a lot more difficult.  Generally 5-8 miles.  Average Pace = 2.0-2.25 mph

  • “Strenuous” hikes will be challenging for most experienced hikers. The hike will generally be longer and steeper, but may be deemed "Strenuous" because of the elevation gain. Usually 7-10 miles.  Average pace 1.0-2.0 mph

  • "Very Strenuous".   Only well-conditioned and well-prepared hikers should attempt very strenuous hikes. The hike will generally be long and steep, and may include rock scrambling, stream crossings, and other challenging terrain. Generally 8 miles and over.

Average hiking speed does not consider fitness, rest, exploration.

By signing up for my hiking events, you are acknowledging that you are fully capable of handling the physical requirements of the hike and will take sole responsibility for yourself in the event you become separated from the group. Bring a trail map in the event you find the hike too fast or difficult and need to return back to the trailhead.
